The Romans - Pottery and pewter plate found during housing development in 1950s. The existence of Putnoe Street may date back to Roman times

Pre- 10th Century

An unknown Anglo Saxon settler - Putta. 'Putta's hoh' - meaning the hoh, or spur, or heel of land of Putta (Old English name)

Pre 1066

Anschil (or Anshil or Ansketill), a wealthy royal thegn of King Edward held the Manor of Putnoe at the time of the Norman Conquest.

Ralph Tallebosc (or Ralf Taillebois) married to Azelina, from Normandy.

Hugh de Beauchamp (Married in 1082 to Adeliza Matilda Tallebosc, daughter of Ralph, in Bedford) - Listed in the Domesday Book, first Baron of Bedford, died 1141.

1537

Cisterian Abbey of Warden received Putnoe as an endowment from the de Beauchamp family. Comprised of a grange or outlying farm of the monastry until dissolution in 1537.

Manor was surrended to the Crown (King Henry VIII). Rented by Oliver Leader in 1539.

25th November 1731

John and Joan Gostwick purchased from Oliver Leader the manor of Putnoe for £760. Held by the Gostwicks of Willington until Sir William Gostwick, the 5th Baronet.

25th November 1731

1774

Sarah Duchess of Marlborough (Sarah Jennings) bought the manor of Putnoe along with manors of Willington, Ravensden and Goldington for £51,000.

1910

Charles Pope, a Miller from Sandy, bought the Putnoe farm and its 520 acres of pasture land for £25,531 from the 9th Duke of Bedford. This was kept in the Pope family after his death in 1888 until 1910, when the land was sold in lots.

Putnoe Farm Leased by:

1886 to 1898 - Thomas John Davies

1903 to 1910 - Charles Hartop and latterly Arthur Edwin Hartop

1950, 61 and 69

The Hartop family purchased Putnoe farm in 1910 and was occupied by Arthur Edwin Hartop. He continued to occupy the farm until after 1939. In 1947 Putnoe farm is occupied by Jack Hartop. Finally occupied by Harriet Zillah Hartop from 1949 until 1968. Land sold to Bedford Corporation in 1950s for Housing Estate. Farm house demolished in 1969 to make way for Old Peoples home and library buildings.

Bedford Corporation bought land in 2 phases. First phase of 220 acres in 1951, further 228 acres in 3 stages from 1960 to 1967.
